Real Ale Sisyphus

Over the weekend, my wife and I took a trip to Houston for a friend's wedding. I got to have a bunch of Texas beers Friday night but didn't take any notes or pictures since, well, we were there for the wedding and I wasn't going to be rude. The sour from Real Ale, Scots Gone Wild, was pretty decent though so if you see it somehow, give it a try.

But, to make up for that, I went to a liquor store named Specs on Saturday and picked up some beers to bring home. I also picked up some bottles of Real Ale Sisyphus, a barleywine, and opened one before the wedding to give it a try.
Smelled remarkably like orange juice with the sweetness, alcohol, and hops all coming together. Caramel, huge orange citrus, and hops were the major flavors with some bitterness keeping it all under control. The aftertaste had some lingering bitterness, too, but that blended with plum, orange, and some other fruit flavors. Pretty decent barleywine and glad I picked it up.

I also picked up bottles of 2011 Boulevard Saison Brett, Boulevard Nommo Dubbel, and a Squatters Outer Darkness. The latter is the closest to being a regional Texas brewery, but Boulevard doesn't distribute to Philly so that's why I picked it up too. Looking forward to opening them.

  1. Brought an Outer Darkness to yesterday's bottle share and was one of my favorite beers there. I expect that you'll really enjoy it.

  2. Nice! Pick that up when you went to Colorado? Sad I missed the bottle share, hopefully I can make the next one.
